Little Cards

Most flashcard apps get one thing wrong: they assume all learners need the same pacing. In reality, some concepts click immediately while others need repeated exposure. The challenge was designing an experience that automatically adjusts difficulty based on individual performance, without making the learner feel like they're being tested or judged. The app also needed to go beyond basic text cards — supporting images, audio, and multiple content formats — while keeping the study experience fast and focused.

We designed a mobile-first flashcard app with adaptive difficulty scaling that responds to each user's performance in real time. Cards get harder or easier based on accuracy and response time, keeping study sessions in the productive zone between too easy and frustrating. The card creator supports multiple formats — text, images, and audio — for richer learning. A community curation system lets users rate, tag, and share decks, while curated Learning Journeys provide structured sequences created by peers and experts. Eye-tracking studies informed the card layout for optimal readability and retention.

Users reported significantly higher engagement compared to traditional flashcard apps. The adaptive difficulty feature kept learners in a productive challenge zone, reducing dropout during study sessions. The community features and Learning Journeys gave users access to high-quality content they didn't have to create themselves, making the app valuable from the first session.
